The heartbreaking stories coming out of Queensland at the moment are enough to make anyone cry.

Not only have so many thousands of people lost everything they own – some have also lost loved ones.

And for many, there was little they could do in terms of being prepared for the latest round of flash floods which are still wreaking havoc.

Could you still pay your mortgage if you weren’t working?

When PM Julia Gillard asked the audience in this week’s public forum how many could afford to pay their mortgage if they weren’t working, only a handful of the 200 strong crowd raised their hand….which based on experience, isn’t that surprising.

Because although purchasing a home and taking out a mortgage is often the single biggest financial outlay of a person’s life, not many people stop to consider how they would service a mortgage if they become sick or injured or out of a job.

Mortgage related insurances are set to become more popular this year as repayments rise and mortgage holders seek to protect their financial ability to keep their property.

The current rate climate is likely to jolt some borrowers into action to investigate what protection they can put into place, if the ability to pay their mortgage is affected by an event and many borrowers are blissfully unaware of the risk posed if they are unable to meet mortgage repayments because of sickness, prolonged illness, injury or death.
